Iron & Wine live at MFNW Music Fest NorthWest 2011, Pioneer Sq., Portland, September 9, 2011

It's actually called Pioneer Courthouse Square, but I like "Pioneer Square" better. Is it too late to change the name? I missed the first opening band but the second one was the girl from the Oscar-winning Irish movie "Once" and the group "The Swell Season", Czech singer Markéta Irglová. She also later sang backing vocals with Iron & Wine.

People filled Portland's main square on a summerish September night. Iron & Wine, a new discovery for me, was just as good live as on record, if not better. Maybe they highlighted the more rocking stuff. Several of the songs featured extended jams by leader Sam, the other guitarist, the keyboardist, and the amazing sax player. You first think "folk" re: Iron & Wine, but upon further listens, you've definitely got to add soul, world music, and jazz.
