MDC, fresh off a month-long US tour with the Subhumans (UK), came back to their hometown of Portland, Oregon and played last night, as MDC Acoustic (featuring lead singer Dave Dictor singing and playing acoustic guitar, and Mad Mike Smith playing bass and singing), at a benefit for Portland's favorite zine Rozine, produced by the inimitable Roz, who was celebrating the release of Rozine #4....

Also playing at the show were: Sho-gun, Growler (a spirited punk folk three-piece with a violin who struck a chord with the audience), and Roz's band Thee Iron Tides.

MDC Acoustic played MDC classics like "John Wayne Was a Nazi" and "Chicken Squawk", as well as some new songs. The old thrash songs translate surprisingly well to a quieter folk format, and Dave and Mike do great harmonies together. Dave proved he can sing as well as scream, and in this slower, calmer presentation, we can catch the lyrics better, the songs' strengths revealed in meaning and harmony instead of the "loud, fast" formula encountered at hardcore gigs.

A good time was had by all....
